One unique and interesting feature of swallowtail caterpillar is its snake’s head mimicry appearance. This caterpillar species has large spots on the thorax giving the creepy look of a snake’s head. This adorable larva of the spicebush swallowtail caterpillar has eyes that deceptively resemble those of a snake and they are more than the eye can see.

Thanks to its appearance, this caterpillar is a master of camouflage. Because many creatures are predators of spicebush swallowtail caterpillar, it will easily change their appearance. The larva can appear dark brown resembling bird droppings, pushing predators away.

At the pupate stage, the Swallowtail caterpillar will turn into yellow-green and marked by large spots to confuse predators. The large spots on its thorax help this caterpillar mimic common green snakes making it easy to ward off predators.

Jewel beetles are brilliantly colored and usually change color as your angle of view changes. Also called flat-head borers, these beetles grow in plants and their characteristic shape makes them stand out from other beetle species.

The metallic wood borers feature an elongated body and are nearly oval in shape. They are hard-bodied and flat with serrate antennae. The jewel beetles can grow up to 10 centimeters and their colors vary from brown, dull black to bright greens and purples depending on the species you see.

Adult jewel beetles live in trees and have special behaviors and defenses. These beetles can move even in an inhospitable environment as they can proliferate in large numbers without worrying about predators.

A recent discovery in the world of insects reveals that jewel beetles are built with the weird ability to detect flames of a forest fire. The jewel beetle can detect wild forest fire that is even 80 kilometers away. Surprisingly, jewel beetles can also hear cracking of the wood and burning products thanks to their supersensitive receptors.

Greta Oto or Glasswing Butterfly is a species of the brush-footed butterfly and a member of the subfamily Danainae. Sighting a Greta Oto will without a doubt leave you with admiration. This butterfly is widely known for its distinctive transparent wings that aid in escaping and confusing predators.

The glasswinged butterfly can disguise its appearance without extensive cryptic coloration. Another distinctive characteristic of the glasswinged butterfly is that its wings may appear delicate and weak, but it can carry up to 40 times its own weight. Other distinctive behaviors of the Greta Oto are long migrations and lekking.

The glasswing butterfly can travel up to 12 miles a day and at a speed of 8 miles per hour. The key reason behind its migration is the idea of changing elevations and population density.

To attract females, male glasswinged butterflies will form large gatherings where they compete for available mates. They display themselves in large groups to attract females. They also release pheromones during these gatherings or lekking to attract mates.

Before the males’ butterflies can convert alkaloid compounds to pheromones they use during mating, these compounds are also nauseating to predators. Hence, they can lek without any worries of being prey.
